There are many beautiful traditions that are associated with getting married in Iraq. One of the most special moments is when the groom goes to ask for the bride's hand in marriage from her family. If the family approves, then the couple will exchange marriage vows and gifts on their wedding day. Toast to the couple are also given on this special occasion.
Another lovely tradition is henna night where both the bride and groom have their hands and feet decorated with henna. This is just one of the many wonderful traditions that make getting married in Iraq a truly special event.
The Engagement Ceremony
The engagement ceremony is one of the most important traditions in Iraq. The sab'a as we call it comes after the marriage in seven days (now some of them makes it after the first meeting).
It is a very special moment for both families, as they celebrate their children's future together. The groom and his family traditionally shower the bride with gifts of jewelry, diamonds and specifically gold.
The Wedding Ceremony
Iraqi weddings are filled with beautiful songs and prayers to celebrate the joining of the bride and groom in the sacrament of marriage. Most wedding ceremonies involve an exchange of marriage vows by the couple, presentation of a gift (ring, flowers etc, and a toast to the couple (no alcohol).
The bride usually wears a traditional Iraqi woman's dress called a "Masada" while the groom typically wears a suit. After the ceremony, the guests often enjoy a meal and dancing. Chaldean weddings are a joyous occasion for all who attend!
The Wedding Reception
It is both an American and a Chaldean tradition that the bride, groom and wedding party are introduced as they enter the reception. The father of the bride introduces his daughter to her husband-to-be with a kiss on each cheek. Afterward, the couple is announced to the guests and they make their way to the dance floor where they share their first dance as husband and wife. The wedding party then joins them on the dance floor and the celebration begins!
The food at an Iraqi wedding reception is plentiful and delicious! Guests can expect to find all sorts of traditional dishes like kibbeh, dolma, and baklava. There is also usually a variety of meats, including chicken, lamb, and beef. And of course, no Iraqi wedding would be complete without plenty of sweets!
Toast to couple (no alcohol). After dinner, it is customary for the father of the bride to give a toast. He thanks the guests
Post-Wedding Traditions
Iraqi weddings are very different from weddings in the United States. After the ceremony, the bride and groom are usually separated. The bride will be presented with gifts from her husband's family. There is also a large wedding party where there is a lot of food and traditional and modern music.
